Figure of speech may be defined as ” a word or phrase that conveys meanings other than literal meanings”. Basically, Figure of speech is a literary device that is characterized by its eloquent and demonstrative use of language. The literary devices which may be termed as Figure of speech are given below.

Definitions And Example:

1. Simile:

Simile may be defined as the comparison of two unlike things with the use of ” like and as”.

Examples

  • She is as beautiful as a rose.
  • He is brave as a lion.
  • Nazia is as busy as bee.

2. Metaphor:

Metaphor is a word that is used to compare two unlike things without the use of “like and as”.

Examples

  • She is a rose.
  • He is a lion.

3. Irony:

Irony may be defined as “a contrast between what is said and what is meant”.

Examples :

Suppose a very black man enters the room and we say, “Welcome! Mr.White.

This phrase “Welcome! Mr.White” is an irony because there is a contrast between what is said and what is meant.

4. Imagery:

Imagery is a literary device in which images are created in the minds of readers to enhance the readers’ understanding through images and sensations.

Examples:

  • I wandered lonely as a cloud.

The above-mentioned sentence is a fine example of Imagery.. this line has been borrowed from Wordsworth’s’ poem “Daffodils”.

5. Hyperbole

Hyperbole is a literary device that is used for emphasis and exaggeration.

Examples:

  • I have told you million times.
  • This room is a heat-box.

6. Personification:

Giving human attributes to non living things is called Personification.

Examples:

  • The flowers are dancing.
  • The sun is smiling at us.
  • The wind is whistling.

7. Synecdoche:

It’s a figure of speech in which we use part to represent whole.

Examples:

  • Soldier—- represents army.
  • Teacher— represents teaching staff.

8. Euphemism:

Euphemism is the use of inoffensive, indirect, and mild term for an offensive, direct and harsh term.

Examples:

  • “He passed away” instead of “He died”.
  • “MY Company has decided to let me go” instead of “My Company fired me”.

9. Oxymoron:

Oxymoron is a use of two opposite terms at the same time.

Examples:

  • I saw a small crowd.
  • I went to the free market.
  • He told me an open secret.

10. Onomatopoeia:

It is a word that sounds like what it is describing.

Examples:

  • Tick tock
  • Ding dong

11. Alliteration:

Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of neighboring words in a sentence.

Examples:

  • Peter picked a pocketbook.
  • She sings a song.

12. Assonance:

Assonance may be defined as the repetition of similar vowel sounds in neighboring words of a sentence.

Examples:

  • Good night, Sleep tight.
  • Dumb luck
